You’ve heard of instant, granulated coffee – but what is freeze-dried coffee? This is our secret to making homebrew so moreish – and also extrapolates the most amount of flavour. Say goodbye to boring, muddy caffeine! In technical terms, ‘freeze drying’ is also known as lyophilisation, or cryodesiccation – essentially, it is a dehydration process. When making our HOMEBREW Instant Coffee, we remove the water from the process, so you are left with caffeine granules that will instantly dissolve in hot water or hot/steamed milk with the most amount of flavour.

The process begins with sourcing roasted beans from local Melbourne roasters as your local café would as well. We then use a commercial coffee machine to extract the coffee exactly again as your local café would too How does this differ from instant coffee? Firstly, we use local Melbourne specialty coffee roasters – enough said. Secondly freeze-drying keeps the flavours of the coffee and allows the aromas and notes to go untouched. As we work with small batch roasters, we are able to trace exactly what beans are being used and other commercial instant coffee brands – they might not even use water to extract their coffee – some even use chemicals!

How does it compare to your pod coffee? The main difference between a home pod machine and a café grade coffee machine is the same as using a manual screwdriver and electric drill – the latter will have more pressure to create a more luscious coffee. Because our process involves extracting the coffee on a commercial grade and we utilise freeze drying to retain that flavour, you are getting a commercial grade coffee shot to add to your milk. In addition, used pods end up in landfill whereas our product leaves no waste behind but just a lovely cup of joe.
